To be fair, Dumbledore didn't know about the Horcrux's at this point. He wasn't even 100% positive about Horcrux's until fifth year. Yes, he does seem to use Harry as a pawn though to see how strong Voldemort is.

I agree with Daniel, I think sometimes in your critique of Harry you forget how young he is. 12 years Olds aren't always bright, they're bumbling idiots bouncing around.

I always read the Lockhart being forced into the chamber as an emotional snap decision. Your looking at it from a much more mature and thought through process, but you gotta remember these are 12 year olds, and Lockhart said he was gonna take care of it. Then you get there and Lockhart says. Nah I'm not gonna help. So Harry's thought process is we need to go help. Lockhart, an adult, said he would take care of it. We'll all go together. I dont see it as him knowing he will get hurt.
